THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 1: Dan Graham

Dan Graham is an individual who spent 30 plus years in corporate america, climbing the ranks, and ultimately leading a company of thousands of individuals across the country. He is also my father and one of my best friends. His knowledge and ability to build authentic & genuine relationships is something I admire the most about him. After working with the Berry Co. and running their business as the CEO selling advertising for the yellow pages, he retired at the age of 53. This, however, did not stop him from pursuing the next chapter of life and all the goals and dreams that came along with it. In today’s world, he still resides in Dayton, OH working with several small businesses trying to help them build a landscape and footprint to become successful in their own right. His expertise and business IQ are at the top of the game. Along with his passion for helping others, diving into several business ventures, and relaxing, he also gives back to his community by coaching high school football and sharing his knowledge about sports and life with these young men. In his spare time, Dan loves to be with his family, travel with his buddies or play golf, have a nice cigar, take vacations to the lake and beach, and watch football on a variety of levels. Having achieved so much, his thirst and hunger for more is still extremely evident. While my father has not had something catastrophic happen to him in his life (something we both are very thankful for), he still discusses the daily grind and how the two words of going forward are crucial to his daily success!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 2: Casey Bond

Casey Bond is a friend of mine who I met about 2 years ago and someone who is remarkably talented as well as knowledgable about life. He grew up in Peachtree City, Georgia or as he refers to it, “The Land of the Golf Cart Thugs,” and played baseball his entire life. Casey was fortunate enough to earn a scholarship to Birmingham Southern in Alabama to play baseball at the collegiate level. They were a small division 1 school that eventually dropped to division 3 by his senior season. Due to this, him and many of his teammates transferred school and went on to play at Lipscomb University for his final collegiate season. The first of many times in Casey’s life where adversity was thrown his way and he had to look deep into his heart and find that strength to keep going forward with his goals and dreams. From there, Casey was drafted by the San Francisco Giants, which I was surprised even as a sports enthusiast to hear how many rounds the MLB has for their draft, to continue his baseball career. Anyway, Casey went on to play professionally for several years until he pursued other ventures in life.

Some of those other ventures included acting in feature films, commercials, and having guest appearances on TV shows as well as developing a production company. Casey can be seen alongside Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, & Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film Moneyball as well as several other outstanding movies like Ring The Bell, Undrafted, My Many Sons, I Saw the Light, and The Meanest Man in Texas. Some other accolades include features in the hit TV show Nashville, being a spokesman for several companies, and a role in the TV Show Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels.

In the acting profession, there are a lot of peaks and valleys that Casey can attest to. At times, he even draws parallels to how similar it is to being an entrepreneur. While pursuing his love for acting and creating films, he co-founded the company, Higher Purpose Entertainment. A production company that dives deep into storytelling while creating a connection for their audience about individual’s real life stories. Similar to the going forward lifestyle, Higher Purpose Entertainment wants to be an inspiration for people around the world. In Casey’s down time, he loves to hang out with his family and friends, be on a beach soaking up the sun or catching a wave on his surfboard, and of course traveling with his wife (a newlywed couple) around the world. Sports and movies are a big part of his life, but maintaining an effective work-life balance, being a great friend, achieving success in his own right, and inspiring others along the way are at the core of what he believes. He a strong christian-based individual and someone who loves to constantly improve himself every day. I admire that about Casey and believe he has a lot of great wisdom and advice to share with others on how to be the best version of yourself each and every day. He continues to chase his dreams, passions, and goals while doing so in a respectable and highly effective fashion. I want to thank Casey for taking some time to be on the show and look forward to having him back to see what his latest successful venture might be.

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 3: Beth Torres

Beth Torres is the president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Middle, TN. Beth and I met through a mutual friend and instantly, we knew that our organizations could be a great fit for one another. Beth gave my company an opportunity to partner with them, help build and serve their mission, and impact a lot of important lives. We work together with one family each month to not only donate money but provide a unique, one-of-a-kind t-shirt for each wish kid, struggling against a life threatening illness. Beth exudes positivity, happiness, and gratitude to their fullest extent. Having known Beth now for just 6 months, it is evident that she is a great leader, a great person, and somebody that truly resembles the Make-A-Wish foundation mission! She is also somebody that I admire and instantly connected with because of her can do, positive outlook on life! It was such a treat to have her on the show and an even better educational opportunity. So, thank you, Beth, for sharing your knowledge and time to be on the podcast!

Growing up, she moved around to several different states as her father was transferred many times in corporate America until they eventually landed in Chicago, IL where Beth spent most of her life. While in Chicago, her parents decided to leave corporate business and start their journey down the road of entrepreneurship. Having witnessed her parents strength, courage, and creativity…Beth knew she had the ability to go accomplish anything she wanted in life. Throughout this episode, we dive deep into what “going forward” means to her and how she applies it to her everyday life. She talks about how her previous roles at Reebok as an account manager in Chicago, earning her MBA from Vanderbilt University, and working as the Vice President of Junior Achievement propelled her and prepared her for the job at Make-A-Wish. Beth is somebody who utilizes her surroundings to be observant of others and learn how to overcome any obstacle that is in front of her. We also find out that normal sometimes is not always boring! Being adaptive and understanding that just because you want something at a certain time, or in Beth’s case, she’d rather be the #2 and not the head honcho, does not always work in the exact order that you want it to (You might be surprised where the road takes you so never say never)!

Beth discusses her belief on what a good leader consists of and how belief in others can help us go forward. Gratitude, mistakes, and serving others are in some shape or form the core constructs of what we discuss throughout the episode. Those three elements are key to a happy and fulfilling life but how do you tap into those and not lose sight of how you analyze them in your daily life? be vulnerable and own whatever imperfections you have because NO ONE is perfect! I GUARANTEE you that. Finally, Beth closes out our episode with a story of her own when she had to dig deep to find the inner strength to keep going forward with her life!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 4: Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson is the owner, head personal trainer, and educational director of Marathon Fitness here in Nashville, TN.  He was born in London but spent most of his life in the Bronx in New York City. A neighborhood that Joe describes as rough and baggy clothes were worn as protection. He is someone that is honest, authentic, genuine, and real. From the moment you meet Joe, you can tell that what you see is what you get. Similar to our conversation, it is evident that Joe is true to himself and his core values.

As we speak about the topic of authenticity, it was important to Joe and I that we recorded the episode in his gym. Sitting on two separate weight benches and using step up boxes for the equipment (Microphones, computer, etc.) stand, this provided the most organic, raw, and real feel that you could imagine. Instead of making this episode sound as clean and clear as possible, we kept it original in the exact place where he trains thousands of his clients. You can literally feel, hear, smell, and see the dumbbells, bar bells, medicine balls, bod pod, graffiti on the wall, and sweat from a client’s exhausting workout (Figuratively of course, the gym is clean and always in tip top shape!) The atmosphere and vibe set the stage and gave us the upbeat energy to feed off of as we dove into a deep and meaningful conversation.

Joe and I discuss his personal background and how he, a kid from the Bronx in New York City, ended up in Nashville, TN. At the core of our conversation we discuss why being authentic, real, and genuine are essential for success. He explains how faith is instrumental in his daily life and how it propels him forward every day to go after his goals!

We discuss what going forward means to him and how often times in life some of the best advice comes from the least expecting places and people. Do you know what the full circle effect is…? Well, we talk about how it can be good and bad.

Joe shares with us some business advice and how young entrepreneurs can find their passion and launch a successful business in any field. Be sure to find your CREASE or ALLEYWAY because that is very important! He elaborates on the various people and personalities he deals with each day…let me tell you his clientele is very diverse so get ready!

We dive into Joe’s medical background and how this one major experience in his life diversified him and set him apart from many other personal trainers, not only here in Nashville, but quite possibly around the world!

A quote Joe and I both heard in the past came from special people in our life and we discuss its importance to where we both are today! Hint: “Do what you love and the money will come”

He explains how he preps to make sure each day of his life is filled with great energy, good vibes, and success! – It’s super intriguing and interesting to hear what Joe does and how it sets the stage for him every day…who knows you might take his approach and apply it to your daily life! I know I already have!

Finally, Joe shares an inspiring story with us about a time in his life when he had to dig really deep to find his inner strength and keep going forward. The odds were against him and the challenges ahead were a daunting task! Find out his story and how he was able to overcome those obstacles!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 5: Lynn Graham

My Mother, Lynn Graham, is an incredible person with a heart of gold. She truly lights up the room whenever she walks in and is constantly glowing with a giant smile on her face. She grew up and spent most of her life in Dayton, OH, either raising her three kids or spending time with her two sisters. My mom is a Dental Hygienist but as she mentions in this episode, could have easily been a rockstar Dentist!

We start the episode off with her sharing some background on who she is and what she does for a living. Lynn explains what “Going Forward” means to her and how she incorporates that into her daily life. “It is our purpose to serve and help other humans go forward!” – Lynn

There is a lot of discussion about raising 3 kids while my dad traveled for work. What the hardest parts were for her and how launching her own business in Nashville, TN proved to her that if she ever got into business…she would crush it! She also talks about how her parents never really talked to her about going after her dreams and that parents now-a-days should encourage their kids to pursue their goals to the fullest extent! Keep in mind that she has gone above and beyond that with my sisters and I.

Have you ever wondered how your parents, or friends of yours parents, have maintained a successful marriage for 30, 40, or even 50 years? Well I have! In today’s society, we are all so absorbed by instant gratification and immediate affection from posting a status or photo that we lose sight of how to fight for someone we truly love and care about. My mom and I discuss this briefly and believe that loving yourself, first and foremost, is critical before you can ever exude that feeling to someone else. Once you can accomplish this, you can then learn how to fight and love someone else even in times of doubt.

Giving, respect, and being flexible are key to any successful marriage!

Lynn talks about how she maintains her positive, energetic, and happy mindset everyday….even when times are hard and during days when she feels down. It is never easy to do but it is a mindset that can turn into a habit if you work at it!

She tells us about her plans for volunteering and caring for others!

We dive into two deep stories at the end that involve her having to find her inner strength to keep going forward! She discusses the process of being diagnosed with breast cancer, how she handled it, and how anyone who is or has faced cancer needs to have a positive mindset in order to boost your chances of overcoming this terrible disease.

The final story about her overcoming adversity and going forward came as a parent and the news she found out about my oldest sister and her oldest child. It wasn’t easy but she was able to persevere and go forward!

My mom ends the podcast telling all of the listeners why and how they should go after whatever it is they want in life!

This was such an awesome episode and I can guarantee that anyone who listens to it will benefit greatly from doing so!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 6: Paul Manfre

Paul Manfre is the founder, owner, and head trainer at Power Athlete Fitness in Centerville, Ohio. He is a man that has built a successful business all while raising a family. Paul is an incredible inspiration because he took his passion, dreams, and vision and turned them into a reality. Our friendship dates back to my early Junior High days. The workouts and exercises we endured throughout the years would be borderline insane in today’s society and quite possibly grounds for him getting in trouble. However, I am forever thankful and grateful that I went through them because he made me a better person and taught me how to go beyond whatever I thought was possible. And I take that mentality and utilize it everyday as I battle the tidal waves of being an entrepreneur.

We begin by defining going forward and what that phrase means to Paul. His response provided a bit of a twist, which hinted that sometimes taking a step back is actually necessary to improve in your daily life.

A motorcycle accident and a thirst for freedom and innovation are what not only drove him into fitness but into the entrepreneurial field as well. He discusses the high lows of starting his business and how hard it is to build a sustainable business. In life, we often forget to observe and appreciate the small things…and Paul really hits on this aspect even describing how the small things have been emphasized on in his athlete’s workout routines.

Paul tells us about his toolbox and how all the pieces inside that toolbox make up who you are and how you accomplish your goals (and workouts as an athlete)! Listen and find out what is all inside of the toolbox!

From maxing out credit cards in a one bedroom apartment to a owning a several thousand square foot warehouse gym…Paul explains all the trials and tribulations throughout that time period. And let me tell you…those trials and tribulations are still continuing today! SO, for all my small business owners and entrepreneurs out there, DON’T think that you will be successful and stop learning because you will always be evolving as a business owner!

We talk about how powerful the mind is and how we can utilize that power to overcome anything we want as humans.

Sometimes letting go is the biggest hurdle to overcome and once it is accomplished…GREAT THINGS HAPPEN!

We talk about raising a family and maintaining a healthy marriage with his wife & business partner, Melissa! It is incredibly awesome and cool to hear how the two of them have raised their 2 boys and how they continue to build an empire while successfully being good parents and spouses to one another!

Before Paul tells us his story about how he had to find his inner strength to keep going forward…we talk about his consistency and hard work. In order to be successful you have to work extremely hard and be consistent! You have to surround yourself with good people and act as a sponge, absorbing all of their knowledge as much as you can!

Just another outstanding episode and I hope all those fitness lovers, small business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs take a listen. It will be some of the best 45 minutes of your life and I guarantee you will grow as a person after hearing what Paul has to say!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 7: Robbie Robison

Robbie Robison aka “Big Dog” is the owner and founder of 96 Apparel in Nashville, TN. Robbie is the type of guy that goes above and beyond to exceed the expectations of his customers. Having printed and constructed an array of items for my clothing brand, he is all too familiar with what we stand for and what our goals are ahead. During the episode, Robbie describes what going forward and being an entrepreneur means to him.

It is vital we all understand that as small business owners and entrepreneurs, we must hustle, hustle, hustle, if we want to obtain our dream. That does not mean that you cannot have some free time to “Veg” as Robbie calls it because it is necessary to take a breather and refocus your mind and body. In fact, Robbie even tells us about a time in his life where he had to dig deep, find God, and re-focus his lifestyle or else he was going to lose everyone that cared about him and supported him along his journey.

We discuss time frames for your business and how each year that passes you are either improving or regressing and eventually, if you hustle hard enough and provide value to others, that time frame gets extended and it becomes a way of life. One of the many great quotes Robbie said, one stood out to me. He said if he didn’t pursued his dream of owning his own business, “he would have regretted it and looked back to the what-ifs his entire life!”  Thats a powerful statement because often times we let fear slip in and overtake our minds to truly go after what it is we want in this life. We only have 1 shot so make the most of it and quit letting fear get in the way!

In this day and age, it is almost impossible to imagine building a successful business without marketing and social media. That was not the case for Robbie. While he was fortunate to start his business in an era where these outlets did not exist, he has continued to succeed utilizing his proven methods, Word of Mouth, because he provides value and his 3 key elements that make him a successful business owner. Those 3 key elements are interesting because I was even surprised by his answer. While Robbie doesn’t rely on social media and marketing like most companies, he has adopted to some social media and will continue to evolve but it is because of the way he operates and develops authentic relationships that allows him to thrive without those outlets.

We both enjoy listening to Gary Vee, short for Gar Vaynerchuk,an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and internet personality who is extremely successful. It’s interesting to see how Gary’s take on certain topics relates to what Robbie and I discuss throughout the podcast. Listen closely and see if those are topics you often think about!?

Be appreciative of everyday and understand that at the beginning of your business, you may have to find a side hustle to support yourself to live. Be prepared to not have a lot of money or a blanket salary to fall back on. I have been living this side hustle lifestyle for 2 years now and there are definitely days where I get scared as hell but I know my passion and I will do what it takes to survive and make those dreams a reality.

Robbie talks about his morning and nightly routine as well as surrounding himself with good, positive people, which in turn allows him to remain so positive and optimistic. “You are who you hang around with!”

Just another outstanding episode and I hope all of the small business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs take a listen. THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 8: Jake Kelfer

You know when you instantly connect with someone who shares similar ambitions and career aspirations as yourself…? Well, Jake Kelfer is one of those guys and we instantly hit it off talking about sports, travel, entrepreneurship, and building genuine relationships! I cannot say enough great things about Jake in the short amount of time that I have known him…But, one thing I can say for certain is that him and I will have a long-lasting, great friendship for many years to come!

Jake is a young all star and at the age of 25 has the knowledge of an expert. While he will admit that he is still learning, growing, and gaining so much more knowledge, as we all are, it is important that I commend him for his accolades. He is the bestselling author of ELEVATE BEYOND, an inspirational and motivational speaker, and the owner of the NBA’s only secondary combine in the country, Professional Basketball Combine! *Links to everything will be below!

During our podcast episode Jake and I discuss a myriad of things. He tells us his definition of going forward and how he implements it in his everyday life. We talk about his love for Taco Bell and Cheesy Gordita Crunches. He elaborates on his basketball combine and how he launched that business in spite of everyone telling him he couldn’t! We discuss the struggles for writing Elevate Beyond, his first book, which provides a real world guide to standing out in the job market and helping others find their passion!

Jake is a huge family guy and lives by his motto, “FAMILY OVER EVERYTHING” #FOE. We discuss that going out and trying things is key and adding value while doing those things is even more important. He tells us how he helps others find clarity when their path to success isn’t so clear.

Research and preparation are key and a fundamental aspect for anyone striving to find their definition of success. KEY POINT: R & P extends far beyond your first interview out of college! Making people feel good is something he prides himself on and doing so in an authentic, genuine way. He claims that something as simple as remembering a person’s name can go a long way!

Sometimes greatness comes from strange places and he explains to us how his book title and what he wanted out of it came from brainstorming, love, Toy Story, & Buzz Lightyear!

Jake is also best friends with Jake Kassan, Founder and CEO of MVMT watches….a Company that has exploded onto the mainstream market in the last 3-5 years. I even own one of their watches and can say first hand that their watches are of high quality. He tells us how his friend, from an outsiders observant point of view, helped show him a great deal about entrepreneurship and social media marketing.

“Take people up on the offers when they are willing to help! You never know when that one offer may change your life!” – Jake Kelfer

Jake is a high-energy, fast paced guy who leaves everything he has on the court, or, on the stage when he speaks! People gravitate toward him because he takes that approach and showcases why he is authentic and truly believes in what he says.

Jake has learned to appreciate others, be happy for their success, and in turn not compare himself to them! Comparison is often an evil we all cannot escape!

Do things that are uncomfortable because you have to and because you want to…This is key to overcoming fear as well as growing as a person in a multitude of ways.

We learn that Jake has every day accounted for and that he absorbs as much of those 86,400 seconds as he can! His final story about overcoming a tragedy at a pivotal moment in his life and going forward is incredible…and honestly, the best to date! Trust me, you do not want to miss it!

Finally, Jake is a bundle of knowledge but it was this quote that truly stuck with me the most…A quote that he created himself and one that makes you pause and ask him to repeat!  “CREATE A JOURNEY WORTH LIVING AND A STORY WORTH TELLING!”

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 9: Eddie George

Growing up playing football in Ohio, I idolized guys like Eddie George, so to have the opportunity to get him on my podcast was an absolute pleasure! Eddie, or, Edward Nathan George Jr., is one of the smartest, most stand up guys I have ever met. Everything he says comes from something deep inside him and you instantly notice how heartfelt and genuine he is! We all know Eddie as, Football Eddie, the best running back to ever play the game of football, a Heisman trophy winner, an All-Pro NFL RB, Rookie of the year, Future NFL Hall of Fame RB…the list goes on and on. But what many people do not know, is the man outside of football who acts in film and in theatre, runs many successful businesses, and educates the younger generations on important aspects of life and business.

Eddie and I discuss what Going Forward means to him and how he incorporates his definition into his daily life. Just remember, there is no safety net and we must analyze every obstacle and figure out how to get passed it to keep going forward. Have unshakable faith because there are times, sometimes the hardest times, when we need to, as the Bible says, “Walk by faith and not by sight!”

Have you ever thought about thinking outside the box? Well, I’m sure in one form or another we have all used or heard that term when trying to find a solution. A tip Eddie suggests is instead of think outside the box, why don’t we just eliminate the box all together and constantly think past where we ever thought we could! You might just learn to feel comfortable in some of the most uncomfortable situations! Boom! I was instantly mind-blown and could not agree more.

We discuss his early childhood growing up in Philadelphia and how a decision his mother made changed the course of his life forever. Transitioning to Military School was not easy for Eddie but it challenged him and made him a better person…a TOTAL PERSON! He still goes back to those days and the various things he learned while at Fork Union Military Academy to improve upon various areas of his life.

He tells us what propelled him forward when his dad was not around to watch him achieve success on and off the field. Eddie describes a letter he wrote to his dad and how he wanted to inspire him and show him that his son was making something of himself! I asked Eddie what it felt like when his dad told him that he was the best running back to ever play the game!

We learn how one of the lowest days early on during his Ohio State football career became his highest point. That day taught him and prepared him to work as hard as he has ever worked so he could one day be the 1995 Heisman trophy winner! I asked him what it felt like to hear two of his former head coaches speak so highly of him and his work ethic. We also find out what drove him to always be the hardest worker in the room.

He tells me some of the most talent guys he ever played with or against and he explains the biggest life lesson that football taught him!

We find out why Eddie gets quiet and self reflects!

He tells us how Acting and being involved in theatre & film helped him find his path after football. He had some early struggles trying to figure out who he was, as many athletes do on a variety of levels, and acting proved to be his crutch that propelled him forward.

We discuss what it is like to work with inspirational and hard working guys like Dwayne “THE ROCK” Johnson and LL Cool J!

We learn what Eddies’ 3 E’s are and how they are incorporated in all things he is involved in today.

I ask Eddie what his take is on Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) and we find out that his playstation NCAA 2014 Dynasty at UVA is crushing it in this category…FYI, his defense is filled with beasts that totally grasp E.I.

We talk Edward George Wealth Management and the 4 core values that are not only the companies but Eddie’s personal core values too. It is amazing how well they all work together and create a full-circle effect.

WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS! Eddie does this everyday and instills in his kids to do the same so that each day you wake up, you are working toward being one step closer to achieving those goals!

Does Eddie have a potential future back in football? He just might! We find out what type of role he wants and why!

Finally, we finish with Eddie telling us the hardest thing in his life he has gone through where he had to dig deep and find his inner strength to keep going forward. Let me tell you, this one hit home and for all of you out there, I promise, you’ll want to listen right up to the very end!

Eddie, from me to you bro, I cannot thank you enough for spending an hour on the podcast with me! It was a true honor and privilege and I cannot wait to have you back on my man! Keep making an impact, keep crushing it in all facets of your life, and keep going forward during the good times and the bad! Appreciate you brother! – Joey G.

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 10: Todd Devidts

Todd and I met randomly at Get Fit Anytime, the gym we both belong to here in Nashville, TN. We started chatting on a random day at the gym and I instantly knew I wanted to share his story. He is a guy who has been through and seen a lot in his life. From growing up poor in New Orleans and jumping from foster care to foster care…he now owns and founded a 7 figure business.

Todd and I discuss his life growing up committing crime, selling drugs, going to jail, and some times not eating for 3 days straight. Even after facing 6 years of prison for felony arson, Todd realized there was more to life than the dark road he had been on for so many years.

He explains that going forward to him is all about getting up, never giving up, and always bouncing back from anything that knocks you down. He tells us stories from his troubled childhood and early adulthood. Todd explains why he is a big believer in being positive and why he keeps negative people and energy out of his life. He is very into his spirituality and believes that God and Jesus are what saved him.

Todd currently owns a semi-truck remodeling/detailing company here in Nashville, TN that has taken off. It has allowed him to buy several homes and live a life that fills him with happiness and a great family. Despite having 4 kids with 4 different women, something he is not proud of, he tries to be the best dad he can and continues to raise his three youngest the way he wishes he would have been raised.

In 2016, Todd tragically lost his oldest son. We discuss this tragedy and I ask how he was able to overcome it and keep going on with his life.

It wasn’t until a job that he secured when moving to Nashville that he truly realized that there are people in this world who care more about others than themselves. The owner of that job is still a close friend to Todd and somebody that Todd is ever thankful for because he showed him the qualities of empathy and care.

He believes that the best advice he can provide anyone who is lost in their life is to find jesus and focus. Focus on what it is you want out of life and have a vision that propels your focus toward a goal. We both agreed that if you don’t have a vision or focus on something, you won’t have a vision or focus on anything.

BELIEVE! BELIEVE! BELIEVE!

Todd explains his definition of success and how Jesus, treating others well, and giving are the main foundation for true happiness.

Lastly, Todd explains a few stories in his life that culminated in him digging super deep to find his inner strength to keep going forward.

Brief Overview:

  • Todd’s Definition of Going Forward
  • Troubled Childhood
  • Early adulthood crime, drugs, & foster care
  • Being Positive
  • Building a 7-figure revenue business
  • Understanding empathy and care for the first time
  • Believe!
  • Defintion of success
  • Focus
  • GOD! JESUS!
  • Giving and Treating others with respect
  • His story in life where he had to dig super deep to find his inner strength to keep going forward!

As always, I promise that each episode is filled with knowledge and great advice…and Todd brings a whole new element to the table with this episode. It is different than most I have done so far and has a lot of real life, raw knowledge about coming from nothing and learning to be a good citizen to society!

As with every episode, everything may not strike a chord with you but if you can take one piece of advice or wisdom with you…I will have successfully accomplished my goal!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 11: Ben Hanback

Ben Hanback is the type of person that you are immediately drawn to. He immediately is dialed into your conversation and constantly adds value with every word he utters. Ben is currently the resident managing director at AON and has 20 plus years of experience in the insurance industry. He is the author of “Never Leave the Locker Room of the Super Bowl” – a metaphor for business and life about being present and living in the moment, something that is often hard for us to do in this fast-paced, digital world we live in.

He helped start and serve as a board member for Make-A-Wish of Middle, TN and the Rob Barons Fund. Ben is a top 40 under 40 community leader and a finalist in 2010 for Nashville’s Best in Business. Along with all of these accolades throughout his professional career, he was a track athlete at the University of Memphis and is devoted father, husband, and friend to many who know him. Ben is a stand up guy who I am pleased to now call a friend or as he puts it, a FOB (Friend of Ben).

In this episode Ben describes his definition of Going Forward and how he applies it to his everyday life. He goes in-depth about his book, the experience him and his friends had, pre-cell phone age, when managing to make it into the locker room of the 1996 Super bowl (XXX) of the winning Dallas Cowboys. Yes, he was high-fiving guys like Deion Sanders and managed to touch the Lombardy trophy. But more importantly, he tells us how that experience taught him a very big life lesson.

We discuss several topics from his book ranging from situation awareness (“Space Radar”) to Relationship networking and having a positive attitude every day. He describes his diverse group of friends and how diversity and respect has led him on a path to success. Both professionally and in his personal life.

We get to hear an awesome story about how he purchased a $40 lemonade from a young kid which ultimately provided the framework for why he loves to give back and make an impact in his community.

The one thing I resonated the most with in his book and from getting to know Ben is that it is important to do what you love or at least find a slice of what you love and use that slice to drive your passion for your life. Personally and in your career. There are going to be good days and there will be bad days but it is important to use that slice to propel your forward.

Ben explains how he has evolved as a leader. He went from leading like a military sergeant to more motivational and inspirational.

Ben’s three keys to a successful team come from what he calls experience sharing…and those three keys include:

  • Celebrate wins
  • Recognize and reward
  • Embrace Experiences (Good and Bad)

We learn about his late friend and former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas and how a signed jersey with the quote “To more good times” literally impacts ben every day to cherish life and never take a moment for granted.

We end with a tremendous story about how Ben how to really dig deep and find his inner strength to keep going forward!

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 12: Kevin Donoher

Kevin Donoher has been one of my lifelong best friends and someone that I have been able to turn to at any given moment. We have gone through a lot of highs and a lot of lows since our first days of meeting back in the 1st grade. Kevin recently had his first child unexpectedly and immediately we both knew having him on as a guest was a must. From roaming the streets in Kettering, OH to pursuing our life long passion of coaching college sports, and ultimately going after other career goal aspirations…we discuss an array of topics that seemed to always relate back to one thing – Genuine, grateful relationships!

Kevin tells us his definition of going forward and how he applies that definition to his everyday life! He explains why he got out of coaching, how hard of a decision it was, and why he hasn’t looked back on that decision since.

Something I admire about Kevin a lot is that he has no fear of being uncomfortable and will put himself in any situation, whether thats talking to a stranger or living in multiple cities across the United States, to pursue his life goals and dreams. If anything, those who listen to this podcast can realize is that throwing yourself into uncomfortable situations allows you the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. Something that ultimately drives new opportunities to your doorstep and creates unlimited potential in your life.

As I eluded to earlier, Kevin recently had a baby boy and although it was unexpected, it has been the biggest blessing in his life. We discuss how that experience has changed him and why it has been the biggest blessing in his life.

Kevin explains his biggest strength and his biggest weakness then describes how he continues to elevate his strength to maintain it at that point while also elevating his biggest weakness so he can become an all around better person.

We dive into the biggest challenges about raising a child and maintaining a high-level of success at a high pressure sales job.

Kevin gives us his 3 key elements to getting better each day and why young professionals need to just go forward with life when unexpected events occur because thats the only way to go!

Finally, we end with a great story/event that Kevin experienced in his early adulthood where he nearly lost his mother to a heart-attack. At the age of 19-20 years old, Kevin was in charge of making the executive decision on what procedure needed to be done to his mother to save her life. Talk about a high-pressure, intense situation! Kevin exude confidence, relied on faith and the doctors expertise to make a sound, and smart decision that saved his mother’s life. It is truly an incredible story and one that embodies the mantra of going forward by being positive and optimistic that the best results were ahead.

Brief Overview:

  • Kevin’s Definition of Going Forward
  • Why he got out of coaching
  • How living in multiple cities allowed him to get out of his comfort zone and grow as a person
  • Unexpectedly having a baby and how he moved forward to become a great father
  • Kevin’s biggest strength and weakness
  • 3 key elements to getting better each day
  • Why going forward is key for young adults when unexpected events arise in their life
  • His story in life where he had to dig super deep to find his inner strength to keep going forward!

As always, I promise that each episode is filled with knowledge and great advice…and Kevin showcases another great reason why he is not only my best friend, but somebody that anyone can lean on when they need help.

As with every episode, everything may not strike a chord with you but if you can take one piece of experience sharing or wisdom with you…I will have successfully accomplished my goal!

Kevin, I love you man. I appreciate you as a person, as a friend, and as a brother. I know we have our differences but at the end of the day, I can always count on you for anything. Thank you for being vulnerable and opening up about an array of topics that were filled with great knowledge and perspective. Your baby boy has truly impacted your life in so many ways in such a short amount of time that I cannot wait to see him grow to become a positive impact in society. I am excited to see where you are headed and I know you have great things ahead. Keep pursuing your goals, embracing your vision, and following your dreams! Continue to be a great father, Future husband/Current boyfriend, friend, brother, son, and most importantly a great human being! THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 13: Alexis Teichmiller

Alexis Teichmiller has become a great friend of mine here in Nashville, TN and we randomly met on a plane from Columbus, OH to Nashville. She is someone who I admire a lot and can go to for honest opinions and a boost of energy.

She is the affiliate manager for a software start up company called Convert Kit, a competitor to mail chimp which some of you may be more familiar with. Alexis is a content creator for hospitality brands around the globe, an online blogger/vlogger, and the host of her brand and podcast The Laptop Lifestyle.

As you can tell, like me, Alexis wears many hats when it comes to her professional endeavors. While she loves blogging and creating content around her brand, she loves photography, loves to travel, and wrote her first book at the age of 17. You read that right…17! She is very impressive and extremely mature for being just 25 years of age.

Alexis defines for us going forward and what that means to her. She tells about her clothing company, A T Avenue, that she started out of boredom while in College, in which she had great success running 70 trunk shows her first year of business. That’s a lot of trunk shows people!

We discuss how an entrepreneur class in high school shaped her into the person she is today and led her down a path of the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

Alexis tells us what motivates, inspires, and helps her grow. You will be surprised to find out that a lot of the time it comes from being alone and intrinsically thinking about her purpose here on this earth.

There are times in everyone’s life where you have to turn away an opportunity because it just doesn’t seem or feel right. Are you nodding your head yes in agreement? Well, Alexis and I discuss a recent experience where she had turn away an opportunity she’s striving after for quite some time. She tells us how hard it was to do and the pain she felt after but ultimately it did not align with her core values and that was her key factor.

Alexis is crushing it on Instagram and really showcasing what she preaches on a day to day basis -> Vulnerability. I asked her why she is all in on Instagram, how she continues to build her personal and laptop lifestyle brand, and what she suggests is important for others to do the same with their personal brands.

She discusses what she looks for in people who want to collaborate and how she determines if a company or individual person will be a good fit for them.

Alexis defines success and explains how it has changed over the years and in particular within the last year.

Side note: success needs to start with you feeling fulfilled and grateful with what you currently have because if you do not have that fulfillment or gratitude with little, you’ll struggle to find it when you have a lot.

Lastly, we discuss how experiences in her life that were negative and traumatizing allowed her to learn, grow, and use that as fuel for positive energy.

Alexis, thank you for being such a great person, a great friend, and somebody that loves to make an impact and help others around the world. As I mentioned on this episode, you are a bright light for anyone that knows you, so please keep shining bright, and continue to touch as many people as you can! I greatly appreciate our friendship and I value you as a person for being so open, honest, and vulnerable on the podcast.

So, cheers to you and to many good times together! I am excited to get our collaboration out to the public so we can crush it with your apparel expansion for THE LAPTOP LIFESTYLE. Thank you for letting me help and be apart of helping you grow that portion of your business/brand!

Sincerely,

Joey AKA Brother-Man

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 14: Albert Hacker

Have you ever considered running for mayor in your city…? Yes? No? Well, Albert Hacker is one of those individuals who is stepping up, putting himself out on a limb, and making a run at it here in Nashville, Tennessee. Albert does not have direct experience with politics or anything related to government but what he does have is a great knack for understanding and relating to people. Something that most would say is crucial to running a successful council in any city in the United States.

Albert grew up an avid sports fan and participant…something we both can relate to all too well. I think that is part of the reason when he approached me about the show, I knew it was a great fit for a podcast episode. It is quickly evident that his sports background, and big stature, play a vital role in getting recognized just about anywhere he goes. Coupled with a giant smile and an even more welcoming personality, Albert exudes everything about teamwork, empathy, passion, transparency, and community. He is a father of 2 and lives everyday trying to be a great example on how to live life in a positive and impactful way.

Albert has extensive experience in commercial real estate, medical sales, and as I mentioned before, playing basketball professionally overseas. If there’s one thing you can take away from what he says, “Its that honesty, community, and all the people of the city of Nashville are his top priority if he is to get elected our next mayor.

In today’s episode we discuss how Albert lives his life in a forward fashion, what his definition of going forward is and how he applies it to his everyday life. He talks about ways he will enhance the current systems in place to make Nashville not only the most fun city to visit but the best city to live in. Having two young children he knows that future generations are key to long term success so ensuring our school systems are top notch and implementing plans to lean on different school districts for ideas will be key for top tier learning.

We also discuss how athletics translates well to being a leader in business and in life. Albert tells us why transparency, community, and teamwork are so important for any organizational success. He makes a very interesting point about how customers are a huge part of every organizations team because if the customers do not have a positive experience, their future endeavors with your business are short lived. Speaking of success, he dives deep into the many layers behind it and how his definition has changed over the years.

Albert shares what he believes is the first step for anyone to achieving any goal or dream they have in life. We also talk talk about how running for mayor is a constant interview process and how anyone going after a job they want can implement a few tactics and skill sets to be top notch so they can acquire that job they want.

Finally, as with every guest on the show, we get personal and ask about a time, or maybe a few times, in his life where he had to dig super deep to find his inner strength to continue forward with his life. Albert shares several instances where, as he puts it, “I’ve had to get myself up off the floor many times in my life…the key is you always have to stand up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward!”

THE GOING FORWARD LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Episode 15: Michael Chalker

Episode 15 is similar to a book I just read called “The Go Giver!” My girlfriend handed me this 130 page book and it turned out to be one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Just like that book, this episode with my good bud Mike Chalker is one of the shorter podcasts I have recorded but it does not lack in powerful messages from a kid who has been through a lot in 22 years of life. Often times, we hear people talk about age and how certain individuals are too young to know this or too young to have experienced enough life…well, I believe that everyone has a great story to tell regardless of their age. Everyone is smart enough to share great wisdom regardless of age. And my friends, that is exactly what Michael Chalker did on today’s episode.

Mike and I discuss how he lives his life in a forward fashion. He explains how gratitude, even for the small things in his life, is the at the core of his life everyday. He describes his life growing up in foster care and watching his two biological parents battle various illnesses. The experiences he went through helped shaped the awesome person he is today.

I asked Mike about what life was like growing up in foster and the feeling he felt when he was actually adopted by his foster parents. He really opened up my eyes to what it is like growing up with 50 different people for 8 years and watching best friends and brothers/sisters come and go.

He explains why he loves music and how his music career started. Let me tell you, it all began with a trumpet!

Mike is a recent college graduate and has since moved to Nashville, TN to pursue a career as a musician. After living in the city for 8 months, Mike has not only exceeded his expectations but he landed a gig touring full-time with Jobe Fortner https://www.instagram.com/jobefortner/?hl=en

We discuss how important music is to him and why chasing your dreams should be at the top of everyone’s priority list. He explains his idea of a successful life and yet again, I continue to be amazed by the variety of answers I receive for this question.

Finally, as with every guest on the show, we get personal and ask about a time, or maybe a few times, in his life where he had to dig super deep to find his inner strength to continue forward with his life. Mike explains how saying goodbye to his biological mother and getting closure on that chapter of his life was one of the toughest things he’s ever been through.

“I’ve always accepted life’s ups and downs but I haven’t ever let it define me!” – Mike Chalker
